Anxiety is the feeling of worry, nervousness or unease about something with an uncertain outcome. Anxiety is the body’s natural response to danger,an automatic alarm that goes off when you feel threatened or facing any stressful situation. so anxiety is not always a bad thing. but when anxiety is constant or overwhelming, when it interferes with your relationship and activities it means that it is no more normal or productive. now it becomes the anxiety disorder usually it accompany with compulsive behavior or panic attacks. We need Anxiety Management skill to control feelings and keep yourself balanced.
In Pakistan, the average total prevalence of anxiety established on public samples is 33.62% with a point prevalence of 45.5% among females and 21.7% among male. it is clear that significant measures need to be taken in order to reduce the level of anxiety among the general population.
Symptoms of Anxiety
Some common physical symptoms of anxiety are;
- Palpitation, pounding heart
- Sensation of shortness of breath or smothering
- Chest pain or discomfort
- Numbness or tingling sensation
- Chills or hot flashes
- Nausea or abdominal distress
- Feeling dizzy,unsteady or faint
- Trembling or shaking
- Muscle tension
Because of numerous physical symptoms, anxiety sufferers often mistake their disorder for a medical illness. they may visit many doctors and make numerous trips to the hospitals before their anxiety be diagnosed.
- Fear of losing control or going crazy
- Fear of dying
- Anticipating the worst
- Trouble concentrating
- Watching for signs of danger
Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT)
A well-established, highly effective and lasting treatment is called cognitive behavior therapy.it focuses on identifying, understanding and changing thinking and behavior patterns.
Clients are taught to get control of their “maladaptive thoughts”. the basic procedure for helping a patient to identify his automatic thoughts is to train him to observe the sequence of external events and his reaction to them .with time and practice client become increasingly able to view his thoughts objectively.clients learn to change their thought patterns to reduce the likelihood of occurrence and intensity of reaction.
Behavioral therapy involves using techniques to reduce or stop the undesirable behavior associated with anxiety. the patients increased cognitive awareness is often combined with behavioral techniques to help the individual gradually confront and tolerate anxious and fearful situations in a controlled and safe environment.
Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT)
This type of therapy uses strategies of acceptance and mindfulness(living in the moment and experiencing things without judgement) along with commitment and behavior change as a way to cope with unwanted thoughts, feelings and sensation.
