A missing tooth can be replaced by the multiple options with variable degree of functional and esthetic restorations.
The options are:
- Dental Implants
- Crown (for badly decayed and RCT treated teeth)
- Acrylic denture (complete or partial)
- CC Plate (cast partial denture)
- Implant supported dentures
Dental implant is the best option (considering the case suitability) because it is fixed and does not require any grinding and support of the adjacent teeth (which is required for the bridge). According to FDA, dental Implants can restore the function of missing tooth up to 80% while bridge and partial denture can restore up to 60% and 40% respectively.
A dental implant is an artificial tooth root replacement and is used to support restorations that resemble a tooth or group of teeth. Dental Implants are a kind of roots made of material called Titanium. These implants behave like actual teeth root. Dental implants are the best option to replace the missing teeth. Dental implants offer a smile that looks and feels very natural. Candidates for dental implants need to have healthy gums and adequate bone to support the implant. An evaluation by the dentist will help you in determining whether you are a good candidate for dental implants.
This procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia. A tiny hole is made into the patient’s bone and the implant is placed within the bone. Healing and integration of the implant(s) with jawbone (osteointegration) occurs over three to six months after which the crowns/bridges are fabricated and attached to the implants. Very high sterilization and cleanliness is maintained in the entire process.
Dental crowning is all about dental restoration. Under this procedure the decaying tooth is completely covered to save it from degradation or breaking-out. Whereas bridging involves restoration of missing teeth by putting an artificial teeth in its place permanently with the support of adjacent teeth which are grinded and also covered with the bridge.
For crowning, the RCT treated or badly decayed tooth is first filled with a suitable filling material. Then this tooth is grinded all around to create a miniature of the tooth (small sized tooth). An impression is taken of that tooth the crown is fabricated in the dental laboratory to restore the normal size, shape and function of the tooth. This crown also prevent the further decay in the tooth.
In case of dental bridge, the same grinding for reduction in the size is performed on the adjacent teeth on either side of the missing tooth. An impression is taken for the fabrication of the bridge in the laboratory. These grinded teeth are covered and provide the support to the dummy tooth placed for the missing tooth. Despite of the fact that these two procedures are so popular, one can also go for dental implants if suggested by the doctor. However, the dental implantation cost is higher as compared to the dental bridge cost.
